The Liberty model is one of two smaller Special Needs Pushchairs made by Advance Mobility a division of the Baby Jogger company.

Designed for the older child of size from 5 to 10 years, with a maximum weight limit of 100lbs (45kg).

The larger seat can also be useful for a younger child requiring postural support where a seat insert (for example a Stabilo Vacuum Support Cushion System or even just Microbead Cushions) would reduce the capacity.

The pushchair itself, and the seat size for the occupant, is broadly the same as the Independence model, the main differences are that the Liberty has:

For guidance we would recommend the Liberty for those people:

• whose lifestyle is primarily urban usage
• where the occupant is broader across the shoulders
• where the occupant is of standard build so that they will have outgrown the weight & width by the time the leg is also too short due to the swivel wheels.
• if the carer is accustomed to a swivel wheel pushchair and does not mind potentially limiting the useful lifespan of the pushchair in order to get this attribute
• if the carer is not tall, e.g. less that 5ft tall (as the alternative Independence handle bar could be too tall)

If you want a pushchair:

• to go off-road….and do it really well
• to be convertible, extending the lifespan of the pushchair for a slim lightweight occupant older than 10 years
• which can have foot restraint straps

…then the Independence may be preferable.

The Liberty pushchair is not 'Crash Tested' it cannot be used for transporting a child in a vehicle.

If the occupant has a longer upper leg length than the pushchair's natural 15″ deep seat can support then the Roll Cushion accessory may help in some instances.

If the occupant is unable to maintain their seated position then the Pelvic Strap may be helpful.

The Trabasack Lap Desk is also a valuable accessory which works well with the Liberty pushchair.

Please note:

1. this product is intended for outdoor use, due to its size it may not be practical for use indoors or shops.

2. the product comes 'flat packed' and requires some putting together before first use – but it's not difficult and does not take very long.

The Liberty is now only available in Navy Blue, the Red has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Whilst the Advance Mobility Liberty may be used for someone with special needs the hammock style seat makes it unsuitable if they require postural management support, if in doubt please seek the advice of your Physiotherapist.

Shuttle

An affordable alternative to the Maclaren Major Elite developed specially for the older/larger child who is not able to walk or, more likely, can walk…but not far enough (or reliably in the direction which you want to go !)

The Shuttle appears to be a very similar design to the Ottobock Eco-Buggy but it is NOT the same pushchair, for example it does not have the useful under seat shopping basket although Hamster Bags can be fitted. It is, however, supplied with a four point harness and a lap belt as standard.

Compared to a Maclaren Major Elite the seat is 8cm deeper and the seat to footplate distance 6cm shorter so we estimate that the age range is approximately 4 to 7 years although the maximum weight capacity of 50kg would take an older/larger child.

A younger child may struggle with the seat depth unless you are fitting cushioning which would reduce the seat depth, for example a Stabilo Vacuum Support Cushion System.

We have no user feedback of this product and our own experience is limited to taking the above photos.

We are impressed with the Shuttle in terms of design and overall build quality however we question the practicality of the blue paint finish to the frame which is easily scratched. It is also important to note that unless the footplates are turned out before pushchair is folded then the footplate guides can be damaged – although fortunately it is not essential for the pushchair to operate.

Key differences with the Major Elite are:

• adjustable seat angle
• fold out foot rests
• larger 8″ rear wheel

The Shuttle has a one year manufacturers warranty.

There is a degree of self assembly required when the pushchair is delivered – fitting the seat to the frame (velcro) and attaching the 4 point harness/and or lap belt. Not difficult just a little fiddly.

The Shuttle has relatively small 6″ front wheels and 8″ rear wheels which are best suited to smooth surfaces, it will struggle off-road or with a larger child even on a cobbled street (see our other pushchairs, e.g. Advance Mobility Independence) so it is essentially an urban pushchair. On the other hand the relatively small 'footprint' of the Shuttle makes it much more suitable than the other pushchairs for use around town, inside shops or other places indoors, e.g. School.

Advance Mobility Spirit

New to the range for 2009 the Spirit model is the smallest pediatric Special Needs Pushchairs made by Advance Mobility a division of the Baby Jogger company.

The Spirit is designed for a child with maximum weight limit of 75lbs (34kg). It has a 10″ (25cm) deep seat and we intend the Spirit as an intermediary step for a child who would have minimal growth room in a general purpose pushchair but who may not yet be quite big enough for the larger Independence.

• single fixed front wheel easier for use off-road or in areas with steep hills
• recommended for jogging
• less manoeuvrable around town and inside shops compared to a swivel wheel pushchair
• fixed handle-positive action
• not adjustable

For guidance we would recommend the Spirit for an occupant of size/age 5 or less where it needs:

• to go off road….and do it really well
• to look like a standard pushchair and not attract attention due to its size.

Whilst there is certainly a need for a pushchair of intermediary size, and the Spirit may be a successful replacement for the discontinued Mountain Buggy Terrain XL for some children, it should be expected that the age range for the pushchair will be limited – it is a 'stepping stone' rather than a long-term solution.

If the child has outgrown their current standard pushchair it may be because some standard pushchairs are smaller than others ! You may therefore be able to solve your immediate need with a pushchair which is not intended for a child with special needs but is a standard pushchair with a generous sized seat & headroom and a high payload. Made By Baby Jogger (the parent company of Advance Mobility) the Baby Jogger Summit could be the answer.

Please note that the Spirit comes 'flat packed' and requires some putting together before first use – but it's not difficult and does not take very long. It is available in Navy Blue only.

Mountain Buggy Terrain XL

The Mountain Buggy Terrain XL is designed for the average 4-year-old to slim 8-year-old, with a maximum weight of 77lbs (35kg).

With three large wheels the Terrain XL is designed to cope with rough terrain and enable you to go off road.

It uses a standard Mountain Buggy Terrain pushchair frame with number of components which can either be used separately or together to adapt the pushchair for the child as they grow.

• higher and deeper seat
• standard footplate and extended footplate
• taller sun canopy
• standard and extended storm covers

The Standard Footplate can be used for a child up to 5 or 6 years old.

The Extended Footplate is adjustable to four levels.

The tall sun canopy (& extended storm cover) will only work for up to say 7 years old, after that you will need to dress the child in appropriate weather gear, e.g. waterproof clothing by Togz

The Mountain Buggy Terrain XL Folding System is quick and easy to operate.

Double Major Elite Connector

We have been forced to discontinue this product as we are advised that although it is not itself a Medical Product its use with a Medical Product requires it to be approved by the MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). The cost of doing this would be very expensive!
Join two individual Major Elites special needs pushchairs together converting them into a single combined unit which can be pushed by one person.
Comprises two connector bars. One connector bar is fixed across the front of the two pushchairs the other connector handlebar is fixed through the pushchair handles at the top. Sturdy high specification QuickFist Clamps secure the bars to the pushchairs.
The combined unit can be pushed using either the original pushchair handles or the foam grips on the connector handlebar.

Versatile

• easy to fit – create a 'double' Major Elite in about three minutes
• easy to release – revert to two single Major Elites in about one minute
• easy to release – approximately one minute
• too wide to use indoors or in shops

Secure

made from quality high specification components multiple fixing points – not dependent on a single fixing point
fail safe – safety handle wrist strap supplied for security if pushchairs released.
It is possible to buy a Twin Major Elite which is custom made from two single Major Elites, see Twin Maclaren Major Elite and this is narrower (15cm, 6″ narrower) than joining two together with these Connector Bars.

• the weight capacity is still 50kg per seat (not reduced to 25kg per seat)
• can be split into two single pushchairs when you want
• can have the footplates at the same level (must be at different levels on the Double Major Elite)
• improved handle operating position

Warning

This is big, 115cm (46″), so do need to think carefully about where you want to go. You won't get this into a shop or through a domestic doorway, you might get it down a school or hospital corridor. Probably not onto a train, bus or in a lift.

There may be sections of pavement where the width is reduced due to a lamp post or other obstacle.

If there is a route you need to travel, e.g. a school run, then we recommend that you walk it with a tape measure so you know that it is wide enough to support all wheels at all times. If it is not then understand how you can detour for example are there lowered kerbs so you can temporarily use the road – and would this be safe with the traffic in this area ?

Can you handle the pushchair with the combined weight of both occupants, especially if there are sloping surfaces ? If you are of slight build yourself who could struggle with an adult in a wheelchair then it may not be suitable. You must be in control at all times.
